What To Wear Atlas

What to Wear in 60 Degree Weather: Layers, Outfits, and Quick Fixes

The short answer: we'd call 60°F cool rather than cold. It can feel warm in direct sun and chilly in the shade, in wind, or after sunset. The basic formula for what to wear in 60 degree weather is a breathable base layer, one mid layer such as a light sweater, and a light outer layer you can take off. Jeans, closed shoes, and a light jacket cover most days.

Check first: the forecast for wind, rain, and your time outdoors after sunset.

So is 60 degree weather warm or cold? It's in between, which is why layers matter more than any single piece.

The low 60s and the high 60s feel different, so we split the chart in two. This is our layering guide, not an official standard.

How many layers should I wear in 60 degree weather? Usually two or three: a base layer plus a mid layer or a light jacket, and both on a cloudy or windy day in the low 60s. For a casual day around 65°F, a T-shirt with a light overshirt is often enough.

The perfect outfit for 60°F is one you can adjust. Every piece should come off or go back on without ruining the look, which is the real trick to what to wear in 60 degree weather.

Do you need a jacket in 60 degree weather?

Often yes, at least to carry. In the low 60s, or on a cloudy or windy day, we suggest wearing a light jacket. In the high 60s with sun, you can usually skip it during the day, but you may want it once the sun goes down.

What kind of coat should I wear in 60 degree weather? Not a winter coat. Good choices are a denim jacket, a utility or field jacket, a light bomber, an unlined trench coat, a shirt jacket (shacket), or a thin quilted jacket. If rain is in the forecast, a light waterproof shell does the same job and keeps you dry.

Three outfits we suggest for men:

Sun, rain, wind, and cool evenings

What to wear when it is 60 degrees and sunny? In direct sun, 60°F can feel warmer than the number suggests, so a T-shirt or light long-sleeve top with a layer to carry is usually enough. On a cloudy day at the same temperature, keep the mid layer on.

Wind: the National Weather Service defines wind chill only for temperatures at or below 50°F and wind speeds above 3 mph, so there is no official wind chill number for 60°F. Source A breeze can still make you feel cooler, so we suggest an outer layer that blocks wind, such as a light shell or a tightly woven jacket.

Rain: a waterproof shell or a water-resistant trench coat, plus shoes that handle puddles. We suggest skipping canvas sneakers on rainy days; wet clothes make 60°F feel much colder. Source

Evenings: temperatures often drop after sunset, so check the hourly forecast. If the day swings between 60 and 70 degrees, wear layers you can carry and add back later.

Humid, windy, and coastal cities

In a foggy, breezy coastal city such as San Francisco, 60°F can call for a jacket all day. On a windy day in Chicago, a windproof layer matters more than a thick one. In humid places such as Florida, we suggest breathable layers you can peel off.

Running, hiking, and other outdoor plans

Activity changes what to wear in 60 degree weather: you heat up fast, so you need less than you'd wear standing still. These are our suggestions:

Running in 60°F weather

We suggest dressing as if it were warmer than it is, because you'll heat up soon after you start. For a 5K, a long run, or a marathon morning at 60°F, a safe choice is shorts or light tights with a short-sleeve technical shirt. If the start is early or windy, add a thin long-sleeve top or arm sleeves you can remove.

Dressing for work, a wedding, or a game at 60°F

This section covers only how 60°F changes your outfit; the dress code of each event still decides the rest.

Kids and babies

The American Academy of Pediatrics says that in weather under 75°F a baby "will need several layers of clothing to keep warm." Its rule of thumb, given with its hot-weather tip, is to "dress the baby in one more layer of clothing than you are wearing to be comfortable in the same environment." Source

We suggest using that rule of thumb at 60°F too: if you're comfortable in a long-sleeve top and a light jacket, give your baby one more layer than that. For older kids, we suggest layers they can take off and carry themselves, such as a hoodie or light jacket over a T-shirt.

Between temperatures: the 50s, the 60s, and the 70s

The jump from 60°F to 50°F is bigger than it sounds. At 60°F a jacket is often optional; at 50°F we suggest wearing one, and 50°F is also where the National Weather Service's wind chill index starts to apply. Source If your forecast is closer to 50, read our guide on what to wear in 50 degree weather. In the 70s, the light jacket usually becomes something you carry only for the evening.

If you're packing for a trip with highs in the 60s, we suggest one light jacket, one sweater, jeans or chinos, and a few T-shirts and long-sleeve tops you can mix.

Spring 60s vs. fall 60s

A 60°F day in spring can feel warmer after a long winter. In fall, the same temperature can feel brisk, so a sweater and a light jacket earn their place.

An example day: here is what to wear in 60 degree weather when the forecast reads 52°F at 8 a.m., 64°F by mid-afternoon, and the mid-50s after sunset. A safe plan is a long-sleeve tee, a light sweater, and a denim or utility jacket in the morning. Take the jacket off at lunch and the sweater off in the afternoon sun, then put both back on for the evening. Jeans and sneakers work all day.
